NEW YORK — In the midst of a fashion-fuelled boom, a new kind of brick is emerging in New York City.
It’s the new factory brick.
The bricks are made in a new factory in New Haven, Connecticut, by a small factory in Rhode Island.
They’re now being sold in New Jersey, in the United States.
And the brand that helped make them famous is getting in on the action.
New York City-based company New York Brickworks is opening a new brick factory in the Bronx to take advantage of the influx of people moving to the city for a fashion career.
“We are very proud to be a part of the rebirth of the brick industry in New Orleans,” said New York’s mayor, Mitch Landrieu, in a statement.
This is a new era, and the new brick will not be just for fashion, but for all aspects of life, said New Orleans-based CEO of Brickworks, Michael Vassallo.
Brickworks will be the first brick company to open a brick factory outside of New York.
Its brickworks are in the heart of New Orleans, and its location in the city means it has access to all the labor and resources of brickmaking.
It also means it can tap into the vast amount of potential brickmakers in the US, including some in New England, and expand into brickmaking all over the country.
“There are a lot of people who are interested in brick and it’s a big deal for them,” said Vassalli.
For now, Vassalo is working on the bricks in New Connecticut, where the company will begin assembling them in the next couple of months.
If the company gets to the point where the bricks are ready to be shipped out to New York, the company plans to open two brickyards in the area, which will then be able to start manufacturing bricks for the city.
There’s no word on when that could happen.
In a statement, Vissallo said the company was looking to expand into new markets in 2018.
A spokesman for New York Mayor Mitch Landries said the city is committed to continuing to support New York brickmakers, as well as supporting local and national brick manufacturers, when it comes to creating jobs and building a more prosperous economy.
“As New York is one of the nation’s most dynamic and thriving urban areas, our city has an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the continued development of brick and mortar,” the spokesman said.
Vassallo said the new bricks will be used in a number of different industries, including restaurants, apartments, retail, and commercial.
